Not aspiring to be humble

A book to help you overcome the ick of self promotion, a masterclass in brand transformation and a new reporting tool.

I heard that there are a few women out there currently not aspiring to be humble.

Are you a corporate marketer wanting to build your profile? Solo-preneur struggling to talk about your value? Does the phrase ‘personal brand’ give you the ick?

If you fit into any of those categories, this could be the book for you. It’s filled with lots of practical tips in logical order, so unlike some books I’ve read on this topic it actually works as a how-to, and I enjoyed Stefanie Sword-Williams FRSA (she/her) ‘s sweary, no-nonsense style of writing.

There is stuff in here about raising your public profile, but also about how you show up in an organisation, ask for a payrise, identify your strengths, and reflect on achievements.

Brand of the Year

I’ve always had a soft spot for an M&S coat (and a cheese scone for that matter), so it was nice to see them pick up Brand of the Year at the Marketing Week Awards recently.

The business was at one point starting to wobble, but is now three years into a five year plan – proof if ever it was needed that change takes time and confidence. Over the last few years, the transformation has been noticeable and much discussed among friends and peers – from revamped stores to a gorgeous spa-inspired body care collection and their increasingly desirable clothing. (Although part of me just wonders if that’s just a side effect of inching into a new demographic bucket…)

The transformation has been a masterclass in how a strategy that looks at long term change across all business areas (and taking your marketing seriously) can work wonders.

Another new tool to play with

I’ve been experimenting with a DashThis trial lately.

If you’re a marketer who has spent multiple hours cursing Looker Studio reports, which have somehow dropped a data connection that was previously working for months, or spent ages screenshotting half a dozen different platforms for your reporting deck, this could be a solution that saves you hours of your life…

How to write a great creative brief

If you’ve ever handed something over to a marketing team and been disappointed with what came back, chances are the issue wasn’t talent but a misunderstanding of the brief.
