The Art of Feedback

Why feedback isn't always a gift, a ratings system we can all get on board with and five free courses to level up and ignite the creative spark.

Sam here, back to take the reigns for Issue 42. A big thanks to Cat for last week’s update and for acting as my accountability buddy in her new role! The main photo for today’s issue is from a film night I organised for True North Surf Club recently. I’ll try not to mention surfing in every update, but if you want more details, you can find them in my post here. For now, back to work…

Not all feedback is equal

As a creative, feedback is something you both welcome and fear so bravo to the AICP for capturing the creative struggle so beautifully in this promo for 2024 award entries, and to Alex Black 🎬 for sharing it.

Better every day

One of my favourite brands, Finisterre, released its annual impact report this week. It’s great to see more businesses do this, especially when it ties so closely to their mission and values. What really stands out is the honesty that accompanies the data; rather than trying to pretend they are above reproach, there is a frank acknowledgement that there is a long way to go.

This isn’t about being a ‘perfect’ business – this is about us trying to do better, each and every day.”

And finally…

This week, I’m adding a BBC documentary on the photographer Tish Murtha and a selection of free online courses from D&AD to my to-watch/read/learn list. Here’s what I found after trawling through their back catalogue.

I find online courses a bit hit-and-miss, so I’d love to know if there are any others you’d recommend. Answers in the comments, please 🙏

How to write a great creative brief

If you’ve ever handed something over to a marketing team and been disappointed with what came back, chances are the issue wasn’t talent but a misunderstanding of the brief.
