Full steam ahead

Why purple is problematic, a new guide for HR leaders and the race for true outdoor supremacy.

It’s easy to neglect working on the business when the client work is stacking up. And while this is undoubtedly a good problem to have, I try not to excuse that behaviour in my own efforts here at What’s Next. There are a few things bubbling under the surface, which I hope to tell you more about very soon. In the meantime, I’ll leave you with my insight for the week, which is that adding colour to a plastic product can make it harder to make, and the worst offender? Purple. Use this information wisely, and please don’t make your product development team cry.

We recently welcomed a new client, CMD, onboard, and over the last couple of weeks, I’ve had the pleasure of visiting both their UK manufacturing site and their London showroom to meet the team and get under the skin of a new product launch. The race for the ‘true outdoor’ title is on, with Mountain Equipment and Mammut both seeking to position themselves as specialists, set apart from the streetwear crossover where the likes of The North Face and Acrteryx play. While Mountain Equipment signals to hardcore enthusiasts with their ‘live for the line’ campaign, using a show-not-tell approach, Mammut is much more direct with its ‘not a streetwear brand’ campaign.
